Today’s headlines talk about how 2020 may not have been the best year for business.
Yes, times may be challenging, for business owners, entrepreneurs, and sales professionals in the steel and construction business but its important to stay focused on winning our own wars on attitude and grasp that its not the market that determines our success,… its us. To be specific… its our mindset.
Some in the construction business succeed during challenging times, whilst others flounder and fail. The reason for this is that successful companies, entrepreneurs or sales professionals tend to cultivate a mindset of change, innovation, improved service, and most importantly, learning from past mistakes. Learning from failure is how we succeed and we all know the path to success is not straight ...so don’t give up without a second try.
After more than five decades in the steel business, we thought we had all the answers and that our systems and processes would stand the test of time. We could not have been further from the truth. Fortunately for us, economic and operational adversity stirred us out of our corporate stupor. We accepted the fact that we had become a little complacent with some of our systems and processes out of date and we began our re-invention.
Today we are a new company. Our success coming from a series of carefully planned initiatives including the introduction of new services, company sponsored employee learning and mentoring programs, new strategic hires, and a re-invention of processes, metrics and business tracking tools.
We tell you this, not to impress you, but to impress upon you that you can succeed regardless of the economic conditions. There will always be negative forces and/or justification for poor financial results, but if we change our mindset, have the confidence to come up with a new plan, and are not afraid to make drastic changes as we did, your results may astound you.
In the end, we all do better for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation. Not long ago ago we were desperate so we re-invented ourselves. Today, as the second generation owner of Dowco Consultants Ltd, I can proudly say we are maintaining our reputation as an innovative and technology obsessed 3D modeling, detailing and pre-construction services company serving the North and South American construction markets. We mean business!
