AISC Awards One World Trade Center Project Team Members Highest Award In Steel Construction

Last Wednesday September the 17th, Ewen Dobbie, Dowco Group CEO, attended an award ceremony held by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) at the One World Trade Center (1 WTC) in New York city. WSP Structural Engineers entered the 1 WTC project in the AISC IDEAS2 Awards competition for excellence in steel-frame building Design. Considered the highest award given for building projects in the U.S. structural steel industry, the Dowco Group was among the project team members that received the IDEAS2 Award’s Presidential Award of Excellence for Engineering for being a part of the 1 WTC project.

One World Trade Center, also referred earlier as the Freedom Tower, is the main building of the new World Trade Center. The tower is located in the northwest corner of the World Trade Center site, in Lower Manhattan in New York City. The tower all the way to the tip of the antenna is 1776 feet high, marking 1776, the year of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence. The building includes 3.0 million square feet of office space, restaurant, broadcast and antenna facilities. Construction began in April 2006 and was completed in May 2013.

In January 2008, Dowco was awarded the contract to provide structural steel detailing services for the World Trade Center Tower One –Area-3, 6 and later in the year, awarded the steel detailing contract for the 1 WTC Antenna.

Area 3 included floors 20 through 40, comprising 9200 tons of steel, and Area 6, floors 81 through 100, comprising 6400 tons of steel.
